The ancient craft of Batik is well preserved by the skilled artists of this place, introduced by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, influenced by Indonesian Batik.
Traditional Dyeing Behind This Santiniketan Wax Batik Cotton Lungi
Santiniketan wax batik is celebrated across India for its intricate, labor-intensive resist-dyeing process. First, artisans use fine brushes to apply hot molten beeswax and paraffin directly onto pure bleached cotton in traditional Kalka and geometric motifs. Next, once the wax cools and hardens, they gently crinkle the cloth so the dye penetrates the tiny cracks, creating the signature marble-like crackle effect. Afterward, the fabric is washed in boiling water to melt away the wax and lock in the color. Consequently, no two lungis ever share the exact same crackle pattern.
